Table4 App Design

Table 4 is a mobile app concept developed to address the challenges small businesses faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. I chose to focus on local restaurants and bars in college towns—businesses that rely heavily on both student and community traffic to stay afloat. With limited seating capacity and strict social distancing requirements, many struggled to manage crowds and maintain safety standards.

Table 4 introduces a virtual waitlist system that allows guests to join a queue remotely, receive real-time updates, and arrive only when their table is ready. This approach helps reduce foot traffic, prevent sidewalk congestion, and create a smoother, safer experience for both customers and staff. By streamlining crowd management, the app aims to help small businesses remain operational while protecting the health of their employees and patrons.

Research

To inform the app’s design, I analyzed existing platforms with similar features, noting strengths and weaknesses. I then conducted a survey targeting college students to understand their priorities when choosing restaurants or bars. The results revealed that crowd levels were a significant factor in their decision-making, validating the need for a tool that provides real-time capacity updates.

Site Mapping

I outlined the app’s structure and user flows, defining how users would navigate key features like joining a virtual waitlist, checking crowd levels, and receiving updates.

Design

Using the site map as a guide, I developed wireframes and high-fidelity mockups, focusing on intuitive navigation, clear visual hierarchy, and a clean, modern aesthetic.

Prototyping

I built an interactive prototype to simulate the end-to-end user experience, enabling stakeholders to explore the app’s core functions before development.

Usability Test

I conducted tests with target users to evaluate clarity, ease of navigation, and overall experience. Feedback informed refinements to improve usability and align with user expectations.
